By now I’m sure you’ve seen the research survey we did a couple years ago with alumni of the Awana program. If not, you can find it here:
Why bring this up now? I (Don Hampton) just finished reading a troubling article in the “Christian Science Monitor.” The article, entitled, “The coming evangelical collapse,” makes the case that the evangelical church in our country is going to profoundly and fundamentally change in the next ten years or so. The author suggests that there are seven major reasons why this will happen, mostly based on the church’s inability to translate our desire for, and efforts at, discipling kids into “real world” faith that can change our culture.
But, compare that to what our study found. Kids who have a consistent, focused program (like Awana) that keeps them in Scripture over an extended period are much less likely to leave their faith behind when they leave home.
In other words, Awana can have substantial and dramatic impact in helping to develop kids who grow up to influence culture AND the future of the church. God is using this program as a counter to the cultural tide in the lives of many children and teens around the world – and, I believe, ultimately to disprove those who believe the church in America is dying.
Now, more than ever, we need “approved workmen.”
